Build Your Motivational Fire

Build Your Motivational Fire
How to build your motivational fire.
How to build your motivational fire.

Motivation is a force that compels us to action, but, when you’re feeling less-than-enthused, how do you MAKE yourself get motivated?

How do you feed your motivational fire?

It’s not easy.

In fact, it’s almost like asking, “How do I FORCE myself to care?” And that can feel like a desperate place to be, Believe me, I know.

There are plenty of tips and tricks and tools of mental persuasion to spark a light. There are affirmations. Hypnosis. Vision boards. Goal tracking. Reward systems. Workout buddies. Support groups. Apps. Creative visualization. Praise. These are all useful kindling tools, and techniques that I support and recommend, but, in my experience, the MOST powerful motivator, the durable slow-burning log, comes from one place:

PURPOSE

You need to ask yourself, “What will the fulfillment of this goal mean to me?”

Imagine how things will be different when you’re there.

“How will I feel? Look? Act? Where will I go? What will I do?”

“In what way will it impact my life? My family? My loved ones? My coworkers? My community?”

“What will my life look like when I achieve this goal?”

These are the questions to ask yourself. Then,

WRITE IT ALL DOWN.

Commit it to writing. Share it with new Commit-To-Awesome friends. The more specific you are, the closer you’ll psychologically move towards making it real. And later, in times of doubt, when your motivational fire is waning, let this same post be your guide, your anchor, a log on your fire.

Because in order to care, you have to identify your ‘WHY’ – why it matters; why the effort will be worth it in the end; why you should persist even when the journey’s painful; why you should keep moving even when you’re tired.

It’s this PURPOSE that’s your searing coal, glowing under the charred wood and ashes, persistent, nearly impossible to extinguish. A message from your future reminding you once again why you care; why you’re working so hard; why it’s worth it.
